Speaker of the Nevada State Assembly

Barbara Buckley serves as the Speaker of the Nevada State Assembly. She is the first woman in Nevada history to hold the position. Prior to serving as Speaker, Barbara held the position of Majority Leader of the Nevada State Assembly, and she was also the first woman to serve in that capacity.

The Speaker is the leader of the Nevada State Assembly, scheduling legislative action and chairing the daily meetings of the entire Assembly, known as “floor sessions.” Additionally, the Speaker appoints the Chair, Vice-Chair and majority party members of each committee.

The Speaker, as leader of the Assembly, works with Senate leadership and the Governor to conduct the legislative business for Nevada.

In addition to her responsibility as Speaker, Barbara serves in other capacities . . .

Member of the Commerce and Labor Committee

The Commerce and Labor Committee reviews all proposed legislation affecting business, business regulation, labor issues and working conditions in the state of Nevada. As an attorney skilled in dispute resolution, Barbara Buckley’s experience is put to good use on this committee. She frequently heads subcommittees formed to work out agreement on tough issues.

Member of the Ways and Means Committee

The Ways and Means Committee reviews the entire executive budget presented by the Governor, makes amendments and changes, and works with the Senate Finance Committee to produce a budget without deficit spending.

The Ways and Means Committee reviews every state expenditure. Much of the money it allocates goes to kindergarten through high school (referred to as K-12), higher education, transportation, health and social services, and public safety. The Ways and Means Committee provides oversight for state government spending.

Because Nevada is one of only six states to have a true biennial legislature meeting once every two years, the budget approved by the legislature must look into the future and cover a two year period.

Chair of the Legislative Commission

Nevada is the fastest growing state in the nation, yet its legislature only meets every other year. The Legislative Commission, made up of bipartisan members of the State Assembly and State Senate, meets during the interim period between legislative sessions to address immediate needs. As Chair of the Legislative Commission, Barbara Buckley plays a key role in anticipating our state’s needs including those of security and emergency planning.

Chair of the Committee to Consult With the Director

Like the Legislative Commission, the Committee to Consult with the Director is made up of bipartisan members of the State Assembly and State Senate. This committee oversees the management, organization and functions of the Legislative Counsel Bureau working directly with the Director of the LCB. Their work includes all the planning and technical preparations for each legislative session and the 120-day calendar for the session. Barbara Buckley serves as Chair.
