Elections

On this page I've included some information about Assembly District 8. There's a map to help you better locate the area. As you know, the legislature is required by the state constitution to reapportion all legislative districts following the results of the census. We do this to assure the principle of "one person, one vote" and equal representation. As a result, portions of Assembly District 8 were shifted to other districts while new portions were added. Still, the district remains much as it was.

I have also included information about voting and links to some of the most helpful sites to give you additional information about voting, elections, election law and the legislature.

If you have other suggestions, please send them to me and I will try to add them to this page. Please come back from time to time to check for updates.

Sincerely,

Barbara Buckley
Majority Leader
Assemblywoman, District 8

Registering to Vote

If you are a citizen of the United States, registering to vote has become much easier here in Nevada. You can register in person at the Election Department, register at the Department of Motor Vehicles when you get your driver's license or car registration, or you can register by mail. You must meet certain qualifications such as being eighteen years of age or older at the time of the election, living in the same general area for 30 days prior to the election, not a felon (or have your full civil rights restored), and be a citizen. Click here for more information: http://www.co.clark.nv.us/election/votequal.asp

Voting in the 2006 Elections

There are two elections in 2006.

The primary election on August 15th is a closed primary. That means in partisan races you may only vote for candidates in your party. Democrats only vote for Democrats and nonpartisan seats, and Republicans only vote for Republicans and nonpartisan seats. Nonpartisans are limited to only voting in nonpartisan races.

The general election on November 7th is open which means all registered voters may vote for their choice regardless of party affiliation.

Nevada allows for early voting at various convenient sites, absentee voting (vote by mail, a convenient way to cast your ballot), and voting in person on election day.

Helpful Sites for Voter and Election Information

The first stop here in Clark County would be the Clark County Election Department, which is responsible for registering voters and conducting elections. Everything from finding your precinct number or polling place to seeing who is on the ballot can be found at http://www.co.clark.nv.us/election/home.asp.

The Nevada Secretary of State's Election Division oversees election law, the conduct of the various county election officials, and compiles records of elections and of candidates' reports. You can find lots of information at http://sos.state.nv.us/nvelection/

I am running for re-election to the Nevada State Assembly, one of two houses in the Nevada Legislature. We meet once every two years to review and make law for the state. Extensive information on the Nevada State Legislature and its actions can be found at http://leg.state.nv.us/
